In Judges 6 the Midianites were the nomadic people who would raid Israel during time of harvest. The Midianites does not intend to kill the Israelites because they want the Israelites to plant the crops that they could so easily take out from their hand.(Bug's Life)
One day, Gideon was threshing crops in a wine press, he was hiding there so that nobody could see him and take away his grain.
Then the angel of the LORD appeared to him addressing him as a "mighty warrior". (God sees us for what we will become and not who we are at present)
Gideon asked for signs, he was kind of reluctant to what God has called him to do. (Telling us that it is not a right practice to ask for signs, because asking signs most too often are signs of little faith to the Faithful One who has promised His word.)
After God gave Gideon signs that it is He and He will deliver them, Gideon's faith was heightened.
Gideon with his 300 men marched to fight the Midianites (with ratio 450 to 1). God wanted Gideon to decrease the number of his army, because God wanted the people to know that the victory is not in numbers but it is God who has given them the victory.
