The LORD told Joshua to set up 12 stones from the river to set it up as a memorial of His great miracles so that their children would know God's mighty works, miracles He has already done in the past.
In our own christian pilgrimage, we have our own memorial stones. Stones that reminds us of what God has done for us, so that we would not easily slip-away and forget who we are and where God has taken us.
It is this 1st Memorial stone - reminding us that Jesus shed His blood for our redemption - upon which all other Memorial stones rest. It is the foundation of our approach to God.
An old hymn has its 3rd stanza written by a person from a mental institution. The person has passed away when it was found penciled on a wall in a patient's room inside the asylum. It was believed that he wrote this in state of insanity. True or not, this person was holding on to the memory of God's love as he was suffering from his mental illness.
The Love of God
Frederick M. Lehman
(1) The love of God is greater far Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star, And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, And pardoned from his sin.
CHORUS:
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall for evermore endure
The saints' and angels' song.
(2) When years of time shall pass away, And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray, On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God's love so sure, shall still endure, All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam's race-The saints' and angels' song.
(3) Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Though stretched from sky to sky.
